Dir 10: Communities — Where Practitioners Live

Purpose: The Java community is not on any single platform. It is fragmented across Reddit, Discord, Slack, YouTube, Twitter/X, Bluesky, conference recordings, and India-specific JUG meetups. This directory maps it.

You do not need to join everything. Pick 3 primary community channels and check them weekly. Everything else is optional depth.

The goal is not just consumption. By Month 8-9 you should be contributing — answering a beginner question in r/learnjava, filing a well-scoped bug on a Spring GitHub issue, or presenting at a virtual JUG meetup. That output loop is how you go from “knows Java” to “in the Java community.”

The Three You Actually Need

  1. r/java — for pulse of the community and news filtering

  2. Foojay Slack — for real conversations with practitioners and JDK devs

  3. A YouTube channel (Marco Codes) — for background osmosis during commute / gym

Everything else on the list is enrichment.

What Changed in 2025-2026 (worth knowing)

  • Reddit removed public subscriber counts (rolled out Oct 2025 - Mar 2026). You can no longer verify r/java has 750k subscribers from the sidebar. Use “Visitors” and “Contributions” metrics instead.

  • Bluesky picked up steam for Java folks after Twitter/X policy shifts. Nicolai Parlog, Josh Long, Aleksey Shipilëv all now cross-post.

  • Discord displaced IRC and mailing lists as the real-time home. Even OpenJDK devs are reachable there.

  • The JUG scene in India is quiet post-COVID — most Chennai/Bangalore JUG activity moved to LinkedIn events and Meetup.com. In-person is rare. Verify before RSVP.
