Verdict

1

Effective Java

Bloch, 3rd (2018)

412

M1-M3

$45 / $30 Kindle

₹3,200 / ₹1,800

Mandatory. Read one item/day. Still current for Java 21.

2

Java Concurrency in Practice

Goetz et al. (2006)

384

M5

$50 / $32 Kindle

₹3,500 / ₹2,100

Old but unreplaced. Skip Chapter 15 (JMM depth) first pass.

3

Modern Java in Action

Urma/Fusco/Mycroft (2018)

592

M4

$50 / $35 Kindle

₹3,600 / ₹2,400

Best streams/lambdas book. Getting dated on Java 21 features — supplement with JEPs.

4

Spring Boot: Up & Running

Heckler (2021)

320

M7

$50 / $32 Kindle

₹3,600 / ₹2,100

2021 vintage means Spring Boot 2.5. Combine with official Spring Boot 3.x docs.

5

Designing Data-Intensive Applications

Kleppmann (2017)

616

M8-M13 (slow)

$60 / $38 Kindle

₹4,200 / ₹2,600

Not Java. Essential. Read one chapter/week across the plan.

6

Java Performance

Oaks, 2nd (2020)

460

M6

$55 / $38 Kindle

₹4,000 / ₹2,700

Only real modern JVM tuning book. Pairs with Shipilëv blog.

The Anti-Recommendations

Books you do NOT need:

  • Head First Java (Sierra, 3rd ed 2022) — beginner tier. You’re refreshing after 2 years, not learning from scratch.

  • Cracking the Coding study (McDowell) — language-agnostic. LeetCode + NeetCode covers this better and free.

  • Java: The Complete Reference (Schildt) — 1200 pages of bloat. Use official JDK docs.

  • Clean Code (Martin) — polarizing. Some good chapters, some dogma. Skip unless you enjoy the debate.

Reading Order Rules

  1. Never queue up more than 2 books at once. One primary, one background/slow-read (DDIA fits this).

  2. Effective Java is not a novel. Read one item per day for ~90 days. Take notes in 13_discipline/notes/.

  3. Skip forewords and Chapter 1 of most books. They repeat the marketing copy.

  4. If a book bores you for 3 chapters, abandon it. Sunk-cost book-guilt costs you weeks.

Where to buy (India-specific)

Notes

Amazon.in

Kindle usually 40-45% cheaper than paperback. Amazon India often carries the Indian Edition paperback at ~50% Western price.

Flipkart

Occasionally cheaper for imprints like O’Reilly / Pearson.

ACM membership ($99/yr, ₹8,300)

Includes O’Reilly Learning Platform — free online access to nearly every book on this list. This is often the best single purchase. Verify current ACM benefit at learning.acm.org.

Zoho corporate

Ask your L&D team — many Indian tech employers subscribe to O’Reilly or Packt for staff.

If you can get ACM/O’Reilly Learning through employer or membership, buy zero of these paperbacks. Save print for Effective Java only (you will annotate it).
