99 — Pre-Mortem: The Adversarial Lens¶
This section exists not to discourage you. It exists to make failure visible before it happens, when you still have the capacity to do something about it.
The military calls this the “red team.” You assign a team to try to destroy your own plan — to find the seams, the weak assumptions, the places where reality will diverge from intent. Red-teaming is not pessimism. It is professional respect for how hard things actually are. Every failure mode documented here has been lived by real DSA learners who started with full intentions, genuine discipline, and real time. They failed anyway, for predictable reasons that no one warned them about in advance.
You are now warned.
How to Use This Section¶
Before you start (July 2026): Read all 9 failure mode files. Internalize the probability estimates. They are honest. A 75% failure probability does not mean you are likely to fail — it means that this specific failure mode has claimed 3 out of 4 learners who looked exactly like you at the start. Being in the 25% is possible. It requires knowing the pattern.
When something goes wrong: Navigate directly to the relevant failure mode file. The decision tree in 09_summary_and_reset_protocol.md will route you.
Monthly review: Re-read the failure mode most relevant to your current phase. Failure modes are phase-dependent — the AI Crutch is highest risk in M1-M3; motivation collapse peaks in M4-M5; plateau grind threatens M5-M7.

The 100% probability on 08 is not a typo. Life will happen during these 9 months. The question is not whether — it is whether you’re prepared to survive it without abandoning the plan.
The Purpose of Probability Estimates¶
The numbers are calibrated honestly, not motivationally. They are not worst-case catastrophizing; they are realistic estimates based on the specific learner profile (ML engineer, India, full-time job, AI exposure, impatient-and-smart). If you find yourself thinking “that won’t be me” — that is exactly the state of mind that makes the failure mode more likely, not less.
The correct response to a high probability is not “that’s fine, I’m different.” It is to read the mitigation, implement it deliberately, and set the escalation trigger as a tripwire in your lab notebook.
