India-Specific Context¶

Studying DSA and competitive programming from India has practical specifics that matter: time zones for international contests, platform politics that affect where the community actually lives, India-based resources that the global documentation ignores, and the particular shape of the Indian tech hiring market. This document covers everything that a “generic” resource guide leaves out.

CodeChef — What Happened and Where It Stands¶

CodeChef was the dominant Indian competitive programming platform for a decade. Its current state requires explanation.

The history:

2009: Founded by Directi (Indian tech company). Became India’s primary CP platform with Cook-Off, Long Challenge, and the flagship Snackdown contest.
June 2020: Acquired by Unacademy (Indian edtech startup) for ~$20M.
2020–2023: Under Unacademy, community-reported degradation in contest quality. Cheating/plagiarism complaints spiked. Codeforces blog entry 126245 (widely cited) documented systematic plagiarism issues. Community trust eroded.
March 2023: Hived off from Unacademy as an independent entity. Unacademy retains ~30% stake. New management.
2023–2026: Attempting recovery. Snackdown — the flagship annual international contest — has been discontinued (as of 2024 it did not run). Several other marquee contests discontinued. Community sentiment remains mixed.

Current (2026) verdict:

CodeChef contests still run (Starters series, monthly rated contests).
The community has partially migrated to Codeforces for serious CP.
CodeChef is still relevant for: Indian college students in placement season (many Indian companies use CodeChef scores as a filter), ICPC India regional hosting (historically on CodeChef, though this is changing), and beginners who find its UI more approachable.
For this learner: Use CodeChef primarily for Indian company-specific preparation (if targeting placements at companies that screen on CodeChef). For actual CP skill building, Codeforces + AtCoder is the superior path.

Indian CP Community — Where It Lives¶

TLE Eliminators¶

Platform: YouTube + Discord + Codeforces blog
Codeforces blog: Entry 149065 (verify: codeforces.com/blog/entry/149065)
YouTube: Search “TLE Eliminators” — India-based competitive programming channel
What they do: CSES problem set video solutions, CP-31 sheet (their own curated 31-problem foundational set), contest prep streams, ICPC prep
Activity: Active through 2025–2026. The CSES video solution series is one of the best free resources for working through CSES with guidance.
For this learner: High relevance for Phases 2–5. When you’re stuck on a CSES problem, TLE Eliminators likely has a video. Their Discord is the best India-based CP community forum as of 2026.

r/developersIndia + r/Btechtards¶

Both covered in 01_online_communities.md. The India-specific angle: these subreddits have frequent threads on “which DSA sheet to follow,” “Zoho interview experience,” “placement season timeline.” They reflect the Indian tech hiring meta accurately.

Indian CP Twitter/X Community¶

The Indian CP community on Twitter is smaller but real. Search hashtags: #competitiveprogramming, #DSA, #ICPC. Indian CP practitioners who tweet: @striver_79 (Raj Vikramaditya), various ICPC finalist accounts.

Codeforces (International)¶

Timing: CF contests run at 17:35 MSK (most Div. 2/3) or 14:35 MSK (some rounds)
MSK → IST conversion: MSK is UTC+3, IST is UTC+5:30 → add 2 hours 30 minutes
- 17:35 MSK → 20:05 IST (8:05 PM — workday is over, this is practical)
- 14:35 MSK → 17:05 IST (5:05 PM — overlaps with work hours, plan ahead)
Frequency: 2–3 contests/week on average (Educational Rounds, Div. 3, Div. 2, CF Rounds)

AtCoder (Japan)¶

ABC timing: Saturdays 21:00 JST
JST → IST: JST is UTC+9, IST is UTC+5:30 → subtract 3 hours 30 minutes
- 21:00 JST → 17:30 IST (5:30 PM on Saturday — practical for weekend)
Frequency: Weekly ABCs (Beginner Contests), bi-weekly ARCs (Regular Contests)

CodeChef (India)¶

Starters series: Bi-weekly, typically Wednesday evenings IST
Long Challenge: Monthly (10-day contest, can be done at any time)

ICPC India Regionals¶

Historical schedule: ICPC India regionals have been hosted in November–December annually
Status 2024–2026: CodeChef previously hosted ICPC India regionals. Post-Snackdown discontinuation, the hosting arrangement has shifted. Check icpc.global/regionals for current India regional information.
Who can participate: Teams of 3, open to students enrolled in a degree program. If you’re at Zoho full-time and not enrolled in a degree, ICPC is not available. (Note this constraint.)
IICPC CodeFest: A new India-focused contest emerged in 2025 specifically because Snackdown was discontinued. Hosted independently. Search “IICPC CodeFest” for current registration info.

ICPC Eligibility Note for This Learner¶

Since you’re a working professional at Zoho (not a student), traditional ICPC is likely not accessible. Target open contests: Codeforces (open to all), AtCoder (open to all), Google Kickstart/Hash Code equivalents (check current Google contest calendar for 2026–2027 replacements), Meta Hacker Cup (open to all).

Internet and Infrastructure Notes¶

Contest Performance from India¶

Ping to Codeforces (Moscow): Typically 80–150ms from India. Acceptable for coding problems (not reaction-time dependent).
Ping to AtCoder (Tokyo): Typically 50–100ms from major Indian cities. Good.
Recommendation: For timed contests, use a wired connection if available. WiFi instability in the final 5 minutes of a contest when submitting is a real failure mode.

ISP Considerations¶

Jio Fiber, ACT, Airtel provide low enough latency for all major OJs.
If you’re using mobile hotspot during contests, test submission latency beforehand. Some OJs timeout on high-latency connections during peak hours.

Time Zone Management for Scheduling¶

Useful IST conversions for contest scheduling:
MSK +2:30 → 17:35 MSK = 20:05 IST
UTC +5:30 → 14:00 UTC = 19:30 IST
JST -3:30 → 21:00 JST = 17:30 IST
ET +10:30 → 18:00 ET = 04:30 IST (next day — impractical for work nights)

Zoho-Specific Context¶

Internal competitions: Research found no evidence of Zoho-specific internal coding competitions or DSA resources available to employees as of 2026. If such programs exist, they would be communicated through internal channels (Zoho Connect, team managers). Ask your manager or check Zoho’s internal knowledge base.

Zoho’s hiring for DSA roles: Zoho is known to have its own hiring pipeline that does not follow the standard FAANG LeetCode process. Zoho Technical Assessments (for new hires) tend to be custom assessments. However, for internal growth or external opportunities, LeetCode + CP skill is transferable.

Colleague community: At a company the size of Zoho (~15,000 employees), there is almost certainly an informal internal community of CP practitioners. Finding them (Zoho Connect groups, team Slack/Teams channels) could be valuable for finding practice partners in the same time zone with the same work schedule constraints.

The Indian Placement Season Timeline¶

Understanding when Indian companies recruit is relevant for prioritization:

Since you’re already employed at Zoho and targeting skill building (not immediate placement), this calendar matters mainly if you decide to interview externally. The good news: your 9-month plan ends April 27, 2027 — right at the tail end of the FAANG India hiring peak. If you execute the plan, you’ll be job-market ready at the right moment.
