05 — Paid Platforms: Honest Verdicts¶

Every INR figure below is what you actually pay in India, mid-2026, without corporate reimbursement. The default position: don’t pay. Pay only when the free path is materially worse for a specific need.


The default budget¶

If you spend exactly ₹0 on subscriptions and pay ₹15,400 on the six books in 01_books_canon.md across 9 months, you are on the shortest path to competence. Everything below is optional.

Total additional paid tooling budget you should consider across 13 months: ₹0–₹15,000. Anything more is unhelpful.


O’Reilly Learning via ACM membership — the ₹8,300/year hack¶

  • URL: ACM Professional Membership → https://www.acm.org/membership/membership-options.

  • Cost: $99/year (~₹8,300) for ACM Professional Membership. Includes full O’Reilly Online Learning access as a benefit.

  • What you get: All O’Reilly books online (Effective Modern C++, C++ Software Design, Marc Gregoire’s Professional C++, etc.), plus Pearson, Wiley, and Manning books available via the platform, plus O’Reilly’s video courses. Roughly $499/year worth of O’Reilly subscription value.

  • Fine print: ACM student membership ($19/year, ~₹1,600) also used to include O’Reilly but the benefit changed in 2022 — only the Professional membership tier has full O’Reilly access as of 2026. Verify current benefit list on ACM’s site before paying.

  • Verdict: The single best-value paid resource for a C++ learner in India. Recovers its cost the day you would have otherwise bought one O’Reilly book. If you’re going to pay for one thing, pay for this.

  • Phase mapping: P1 onward.


Pluralsight¶

  • URL: https://www.pluralsight.com

  • Cost: $29/month or $299/year (~₹2,500/month, ~₹25,000/year). No India discount. 10-day free trial.

  • What matters: Kate Gregory’s C++ track (6 courses, ~30 hrs). Nothing else Pluralsight offers is C++-material you can’t get free.

  • Verdict: Subscribe for one month during P0/P1 for ₹2,500, do the Gregory track, cancel. Do not renew.

  • Community sentiment: Pluralsight has broader library depth than Educative but similar C++ depth. If choosing between them: Pluralsight for video learners, Educative for text learners.


Educative.io¶

  • URL: https://www.educative.io

  • Cost: $59/month or $199/year (~₹5,000/month, ~₹17,000/year). Frequent 50% off promos: Republic Day (Jan), Independence Day (Aug), Black Friday.

  • What matters: “Learn Modern C++”, “Grokking the Coding study”, “Grokking the System Design study”. The Grokking series is well-known for study prep and matches Indian tech-study format better than most.

  • Verdict: One month during P2 (DSA + study prep) if you time it with a 50% off promo (~₹2,500 for one month). Grokking Coding study + Grokking System Design during a job-hunt month is fair value. Not otherwise.


LeetCode Premium¶

  • URL: https://leetcode.com/subscribe/

  • Cost: $35/month or $159/year (~₹13,000/year). Sometimes $99/year on Black Friday.

  • What you get: Company-tagged problem lists (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and — of interest — some Indian tech-company tags), sorting by frequency, official solutions with video walkthroughs, mock study mode.

  • Verdict for India job market:

    • Zoho hiring uses its own tests (“Zoho Programming Challenge”) not LeetCode-style. See 07_zoho_alignment_reads.md.

    • For product-based India companies (Google India, Microsoft IDC, Adobe, Amazon India, Uber India, Flipkart, PhonePe): LeetCode style dominates.

    • For HFT / quant firms in India (Optiver Mumbai, Jane Street, IMC, Tower Research Bangalore): custom C++ challenges + LeetCode-style hybrid.

  • Verdict: Buy 1 month (~₹3,000) during the active job-hunt window in Phase 6/7 if targeting product companies. Skip if targeting Zoho/HFT-specific.

  • Free alternative that covers 80%: NeetCode’s roadmap (https://neetcode.io/roadmap) is free, ordered, and video-explained.


CLion (JetBrains) — now free for non-commercial use¶

  • URL: https://www.jetbrains.com/clion/

  • Policy (verified July 2026): JetBrains made CLion free for non-commercial use in May 2025. Free for learning, open-source contribution, content creation, hobby dev. Commercial (paid) work still requires a paid license (~$99/year individual, ~$249/year commercial).

  • Non-commercial fine print:

    • You must enable anonymous usage-statistics collection with the free tier.

    • Your employer paying for a commercial CLion license also entitles you to install and use it at home on personal projects.

  • Verdict: Free CLion is now the best C++ IDE experience on Mac for a learner, hands down. Better refactoring, better debugger UI, better CMake integration than VSCode. See ../11_tools_setup/03_clion_alternative.md for full setup.

  • Trade-off vs VSCode: CLion boots slower and uses more RAM (~1.5 GB idle vs ~500 MB for VSCode). On a 16 GB Mac this is fine; on 8 GB it matters.


Professional CMake (Craig Scott)¶

  • URL: https://crascit.com/professional-cmake

  • Cost: $30 USD (~₹2,500) for lifetime access to all future editions. PDF/EPUB, no DRM. The 22nd Edition (2025) covers CMake up to 4.2.

  • Verdict: The only CMake resource worth paying for. Not needed until Phase 4. See 01_books_canon.md entry.

  • Note: One-time payment (not subscription). Craig releases new editions ~twice a year; you get them all forever. This is unusually generous author policy in tech publishing.


Manning livebook subscription¶

  • URL: https://www.manning.com

  • Cost: livebook is per-book; there’s a “Manning All You Can Read” (~$100/year, ~₹8,500) that gives unlimited online reading of Manning’s catalog.

  • Highlight: This is how you’d read Anthony Williams’s C++ Concurrency in Action online without buying the paperback.

  • Verdict: Worth 1 month (~$20/month, ~₹1,700) during Phase 3 concurrency deep-dive if you’d rather not buy the physical book. Otherwise buy the Williams paperback.


Packt subscription¶

  • URL: https://www.packtpub.com

  • Cost: $19.99/month (~₹1,700) for “Packt+” — access to all Packt books and videos.

  • Verdict: Skip the subscription. Wait for Packt’s frequent $10 individual ebook sales. Fedor Pikus’s two books (both Packt) are worth owning, and Packt sales drop them to ~₹850 each 4–6 times per year. Sign up for the newsletter with a spam-folder email address.


GitHub Copilot / Cursor / Codeium¶

  • Cost: Copilot Pro $10/month (~₹850); Cursor $20/month (~₹1,700).

  • Policy in this fortress:

    • Phase 0–2: Off. You are relearning C++; type it yourself. See ../11_tools_setup/02_vscode_config.md for how to disable in your VSCode config, and ../13_discipline/ for the “M1 no-AI rule.”

    • Phase 3 onward: On, with discipline. Use for boilerplate (test scaffolding, CMake targets), NOT for language-feature questions (that’s cppreference).

  • Verdict: Do not pay for AI tools in Phase 0. Save the ₹10,000+/year until you’re past P2.


AWS / GCP / Azure free tiers¶

  • Not “paid platforms” in the tutorial sense, but relevant when your Phase 6 project needs cloud deployment. Free tiers are enough for a small C++ service. See ../11_tools_setup/05_cloud_and_gpu_access.md for GPU-specific options and Phase 5.

Realistic Phase-0-through-7 total paid spend: ₹8,300 (ACM) + ₹2,500 (Pluralsight, 1 month) + ₹3,000 (LeetCode, 1 month) + ₹2,500 (Prof CMake) = ~₹16,300 across 13 months.

Add books (01_books_canon.md total ~₹15,400). Grand total for canonical fortress: ~₹31,700 — less than one month’s Bangalore rent, spread over 13 months.


The one thing you should never pay for¶

“C++ Bootcamps” on Udemy, “Zero to Hero C++” video courses on YouTube, “Master C++ in 30 days” India-market Udemy vendors. Even at the ₹399 sale prices Udemy runs. These are almost universally taught by people who learned C++ from books written before 2015 and re-record the material as video. The signal-to-noise ratio is terrible, and the modern C++ omissions (no auto, no smart pointers by default, no constexpr, no ranges, no concepts) will bake bad habits into your muscle memory.

Every learning hour spent on Udemy C++ is an hour not spent on learncpp.com — which is free, more current, and better.

Exception: Course-specific Udemy titles by known engineers (e.g., a specific well-reviewed CMake course by a named author) can be OK when they hit a specific gap and cost ~₹500 in a sale. Vet the instructor via their CppCon talks or GitHub before paying.
